Matt LeMay posts 64 to run away with Ontario Bantam Boys Championship

CAMBRIDGE, ON (July 30, 2008) – Waterloo native Matt LeMay, 12, fired a sizzling six-under par 64 today at Puslinch Lake Golf Course to run away with the Golf Association of Ontario’s Bantam Boys Championship.

LeMay, a member at Whistle Bear Golf Club, followed up his solid first-round 74 by scorching the highly competitive field and taking the title by four strokes. Carding a lone bogey against seven birdies, LeMay finished out the day in style with birdies on the last three holes and a big smile on his face.

“This was the best round I’ve ever played,” said LeMay, who has been golfing since the age of two. “I worked on my swing last night to make sure I’d be ready for today and it just feels great to have won.”

LeMay receives an exemption into the 2009 Junior and Juvenile Boys Championship, and is still eligible to play in the Bantam division for another year.

The silver medal went to Seaforth, Ontario resident Paul Doig, 13. Despite starting the round with bogeys on the first and second hole, and finishing out with another on 18, three birdies and solid play throughout the day was enough to push Doig out of fourth place and into second with an overall score of 142, two over par for the tournament.

Tied for third place, one stroke behind Doig was Brett McIntosh of London who fired a second-round 68, and first-round leader Wade Chen, who also managed his own 68 on day one of the competition. Owen Bates of Mississauga rounded out the top five with a two-day total of 145.

The Golf Association of Ontario’s Bantam Boys Championship takes place over two days and is open to players aged 13 and younger. First played in 1923, 2008 marks the tenth consecutive year that Puslinch Lake Golf Club has hosted the event. Past champions include 2007 champion Gajan Sivabalasingham, 2008 Men’s Champion of Champions winner Britt Pronk, and 1983 champion Brennan Little, caddy to Mike Weir.
