Team Canada defends crown at Canadian Tour International Team Matches
SCARBOROUGH, ON (July 30, 2008) – Team Canada retained bragging rights at the Canadian Tour International Team Matches on Tuesday. With Andrew Parr and JC Deacon leading the way, Canada earned 460 points while the United States, led by John Ellis and Daniel Im, scored 423 points.
The International squad earned 408 points.
A total of nine points were awarded on each hole in a 5-3-1 stroke play format. If two players tied on a hole, each team earned four points with the third player earning one point.
The event was preceded by the Birdies for Kids fundraiser, which raised awareness for disadvantaged youth in the Toronto area.
Canadian captain Adam Speirs was delighted not only with the victory, but the fundraiser.
“The Birdies for Kids this year was awesome,” said Speirs, whose vision created the program. “We had the kids out here for an hour and they had a blast.
“With Capital One coming on board, it made for a fantastic day.”
"As far as the tournament, it was really nice for the boys to get another win, and I think we did it in pretty good fashion, " said Speirs. "It’s always nice to be on top. This is a fun event but you don’t want to lose."
Deacon’s 66 was the low score for Canada and the Toronto native was thrilled to keep the trophy in Canada.
“I’m just really pleased that I could contribute to the team. It’s such a great bunch of guys who are close friends of mine,” said Deacon.
“It’s fun to play such an individual sport and then be part of the team with all the camaraderie.
“I felt a sense of importance carrying Canada’s colors. Being able to represent your country in the best possible way and winning was very important."
Even when finishing second, John Ellis continues to garner some ink. The Tour’s leading money winner won the Individual title with a round of 63.
