10 courses to add to your “Must Play” list
Over the past 20 years I’ve had the opportunity to travel to a lot of terrific destinations and play some of the best golf courses in the world. But it’s not always the so-called Bucket List courses that resonate the most. Sometimes, it’s a course that’s a little off the radar that creates a lasting impression. I put them on my “Must Play” list – meaning that when I return to that particular destination, I want to be sure to add that course to my itinerary.
Following are 10 of my favourites for winter and spring travel in the Southern US:
I’ll be doing a lot more travelling this winter and looking for more special courses to play. Please use the comments section to let me know some of your favourites.
Played Tobacco Road last year…. NEVER again.
I think a lot of people have that reaction Tim. It’s one of those courses you either love or hate. Lots of blind shots, weird angles and nasty surprises. Fairly typical of designer Mike Strantz. I’ve played it a bunch which helps with the blind shots but you really have to be on top of your game to play well there.
Played Tobacco Road a couple of years ago and thought it was thrilling and exceptional. Changes all your thoughts about what is possible in golf course design. I think Strantz was an artistic genius. You’re right Peter, you need to be on top of your game and play from the proper tees, especially the first time you play it.
Peter,
As I can’t seem to get my good pal Mr Deeks to return I’ll invite your good self to fly over and play some unforgettable courses, and not an Open course amongst them. Up for a flight to Scotland!
Best wishes,
Chris Smith
Hi Chris – I’m always up for another Scottish adventure. The tentative plan for my next trip is to see Castle Stuart and re-visit Royal Dornoch, which is in my personal World Top 10. Beyond that I’m open to suggestion. BTW, I’m sure Mr. Deeks could be coaxed to come along. Cheers, Peter
