Golf Canada names 2010 World Am Team

Oakville, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Golf Canada is pleased to announce that Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont., Albin Choi of Toronto and Eugene Wong of North Vancouver, B.C. have been selected to represent Team Canada at the 2010 World Amateur Golf Team Championship (WATC) in Argentina.
Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer, Alta. will be the team’s alternate, while Doug Roxburgh, an honoured member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and seven-time Canadian World Amateur Team representative, will return as non-playing captain. Henry Brunton, Men’s National Coach, will also accompany the team to Argentina.
“This year’s men’s team is an extremely gifted group of golfers,” said Doug Roxburgh, who is also Golf Canada’s Director of High Performance. “We are pleased to have Cam, Albin and Eugene representing Canada at this prestigious international championship. They have all played extremely well and have justly earned the right to represent Canada on the world stage.”
Burke is a two-time Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion (2008, 2009) and Eastern Michigan University alumnus. This summer, the 23-year old finished third at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Western Amateur. In 2009, he was the top finisher on the Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) Order of Merit and placed fourth on the National Order of Merit.
Choi, 18, captured the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in mid-August. A true freshman at North Carolina State, Choi has also won CN Future Links championships on three separate occasions and captured the GAO’s 2010 Junior Spring Classic and 2009 Junior Boys Championship.
Wong, 19, is currently ranked 8th on the Royal and Ancient’s World Amateur Golf Rankings. Among many golf accolades, the University of Oregon sophomore finished runner-up at the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, was a member of Canada’s winning Four Nations Cup team in 2009 and is a former (2008) B.C. Men’s Amateur Champion and Canadian Juvenile Boy’s Champion (2006).
Burke and Wong are members of Team Canada, Golf Canada’s National Amateur Squad, while Choi is a member of the Golf Canada’s Development Squad. All three are making their first appearance at the World Amateur Championship.
Team Canada’s best showing at the event came in 1986 when they claimed top honours. Canada’s Men’s Team also finished fourth in 1996, tied for fourth in 2004 and second in 2006.
In 2008, Canada finished tied for ninth with Argentina. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. finished tied for second as an individual.
The Men’s Team Championship will be conducted October 28-31 at Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club. The Asociación Argentina de Golf will serve as host of the 2010 championships.
A record 73 teams from around the world have entered the 2010 Men’s World Amateur Team Championship. The World Amateur Team title is determined by four days of stroke play. A country may field a team of two or three players. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day total is the team's score for the championship.
The International Golf Federation was founded in 1958 to encourage international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship. The IGF, the International Olympic Committee’s international federation for golf, comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 120 countries.
