On the road to Niagara Falls, Ontario
Niagara Falls: A Golf Destination with a World-Famous Backdrop
Few golf destinations in Canada can match Niagara Falls for the sheer variety of experiences available off the course. Here, a golf getaway can combine championship layouts, spectacular natural scenery, award-winning wineries, outstanding restaurants and one of the world’s most recognizable natural attractions. Add a wide range of accommodations and a relatively long golf season, and Niagara Falls becomes an appealing destination for a weekend escape or a multi-day golf holiday.
Located 1.5 – 2 hours from Toronto, the city sits within easy reach of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Niagara Escarpment and the vineyards that have helped establish the region as one of Canada’s leading wine destinations. Golfers can spend the morning navigating tree-lined fairways, the afternoon exploring the falls and the evening enjoying a fine meal overlooking the river or among the vineyards.
The Courses
There are dozens of courses in the Niagara Region but if you’re staying close to the Falls, the following are my recommendations:
Legends on the Niagara
36 Holes / Green fee: $95 Walking
Legends on the Niagara offers two very different golfing experiences at its Battlefield and Ussher’s Creek courses.
Battlefield combines a spacious championship layout with a landscape that recalls an important chapter in Canadian history. Its name honours the War of 1812 and the Battle of Chippawa, fought in the surrounding area. Designed by Doug Carrick, Battlefield features broad expansive fairways, substantial bunkering and large, undulating greens.
Ussher’s Creek offers a contrasting experience to its sister course. Designed by Tom McBroom, the layout makes effective use of the natural landscape, incorporating wooded corridors, wetlands and the creek that gives the course its name. The setting creates a more enclosed and strategic style of golf. Thick stands of deciduous trees frame many holes, while wetland hazards and areas of tall fescue place a premium on accuracy, especially on approach to the smaller greens.
Whirlpool Golf Club
18 Holes / Green Fee: $85 Walking
Whirlpool is an excellent option for those who appreciate traditional golf. Designed by renowned Canadian architect Stanley Thompson, this historic course was his final project. It occupies a scenic property near the Niagara River’s famous Whirlpool Rapids where mature trees, signature Thompson bunkering and wonderful sloped greens give it a classic character. The routing rewards accuracy and course management and is easy to walk. Whirlpool is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2026.
Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club
9 Holes / Green Fee: $55 Walking
Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club occupies a special place in North American golf history. Established in 1875, it is recognized as the oldest surviving golf club in North America, offering visitors an opportunity to play on a site with a remarkable connection to the game’s early development on the continent. Located along Lake Ontario in the heart of historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, just a few minutes from the Falls, the course occupies land associated with Fort Mississauga and the region’s military history. The property is compact, the landscape relatively level, and the surrounding historic town contributes much of the atmosphere. For a golf itinerary that values history and atmosphere and a stunning setting, this course is an essential stop.
If time permits, here are three other courses close to the Falls that would be worth adding to your itinerary: Thundering Waters, John Daly’s 18-hole signature design; Royal Niagara, a 27-hole layout by Ted Baker that is part of Kaneff Golf; and Grand Niagara, a splendid Rees Jones course that was recently shortened to nine holes.
Beyond the Fairways: Niagara’s Must-See Attractions
The Falls themselves are an obvious starting point, but there is much more to discover. Journey Behind the Falls takes visitors through tunnels to observation areas beside and behind the powerful Horseshoe Falls. For a different perspective, Niagara City Cruises brings passengers close to the base of the falls, where the scale and force of the water are unforgettable.
The Niagara Parks Power Station combines industrial heritage with modern interpretation, including an underground tunnel leading towards the river’s edge. Another worthwhile experience is the Whirlpool Aero Car, which carries visitors above the Niagara River Whirlpool and its swirling currents.
For a quieter afternoon, follow the scenic Niagara Parkway, explore the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens or walk the trails of Niagara Glen. The gardens are especially appealing in spring and summer, while autumn brings colourful foliage to the river corridor.
Golfers with an extra half-day should also visit Niagara-on-the-Lake. Its historic downtown, independent shops, restaurants and surrounding wineries make it an ideal complement to a golf-focused trip. Wine tastings and vineyard tours can easily fill an afternoon between rounds.
Of course, the Fallsview Casino is always popular too.
Final thoughts
What makes Niagara special is the combination of championship golf in the morning, world-class scenery in the afternoon and excellent food and wine in the evening. For Ontario golfers seeking a destination that offers much more than a collection of tee times, Niagara Falls deserves a place near the top of the list.
Author’s note: I was a guest of Niagara Parks and stayed at the Hilton Fallsview Hotel.
