Around Town: Cdns at Augusta, Ont shutdown and a win at Drive Chip & Putt

This week our section called “Canadians on Tour” is pretty thin as all the men’s and women’s pro golf tours have pretty much taken the week off to watch the Masters. Our Canadian contingent at Augusta all hail from Ontario and includes 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (Bright’s Grove), Corey Conners (Listowel) and Mackenzie Hughes (Ancaster).

Bob Weeks has a good story about the three Canadians HERE for TSN.

Ontario shutdown

Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario government announced this week that the province is going into a province-wide declaration of emergency and a stay-at-home order effective at 12:01am on Thursday April 8th. Included in this announcement is confirmation that outdoor golf courses and driving ranges can remain open.

St. George’s Golf & Country Club to host RBC Canadian Open for third straight year

If you haven’t been paying attention, you might think that St. George’s is trying to become the permanent host site of our national championship. But if you have been keeping track, you’ll know that the tournament was cancelled in 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully, this will be a case of third time lucky, and the tournament will take place next June at St. George’s.

The pressure is on again at Beacon Hall

You just knew this wasn’t going to go away. Last month we reported on a vote by Beacon Hall members to approve a $250 million purchase offer for the club. The vote was turned down by the narrowest of margins – it fell 8 votes short of the required 2/3 majority. Now comes a new offer at $260 million. Andrew Willis has more HERE for the Globe and Mail.
