Jonathan Kim-Moss and Megan Chapman capture PGA of Ontario Spring Open
CAMBRIDGE: It was day two of the PGA of Ontario Spring Open, and Whistle Bear Golf Club brought it’s best stuff. Players have been raving about the quality of the golf course and the greens were as smooth as advertised. Yesterday saw Jonathan Kim-Moss jump ahead of the pack with a new male competitive course record, and Meg Chapman was holding steady with a two shot lead at the Women’s Spring Open. Despite Kim-Moss’s impressive outing, he only had a two stroke lead on Steve Rodriguez and there were others lurking not far off.
The ladies were off first and Megan Chapman (The Academy at The Georgian Bay Club) took matters into her own hands and made sure that no one had a chance of catching her. After an early bogey she settled down and rattled off four birdies on the back side finishing at 3-under 69, comfortably sitting in the top spot. Chapman won the Women’s Spring Open title by seven shots.

On the men’s side, all eyes were on Jonathan Kim-Moss (Bradlee Ryall Golf/Kaneff Academies) on Tuesday. After etching his name in the Whistle Bear Golf Club record books the previous day, he needed a strong showing to maintain his narrow lead. Making the turn at 1-over par, it wasn’t clear whether or not that would be enough to fend off the surging Nick Kenney (The National Golf Club of Canada). Kenney went on a run to start the second half of his round, birdieing four out of five making sure Kim-Moss knew he wasn’t going to give up easy. Kim-Moss remained composed as he closed out the round, trading a birdie for a bogey on his final nine and solidifying the victory.
“I was well prepared,” Kim-Moss said after the round. “I had a great practice round, and I made a plan for every hole.” His preparation didn’t just start in the practice round though. He gave a lot of credit to when he played with Danny King. Kim-Moss had a strong showing in the 2015 PGA of Ontario Championship and found himself playing in the final group alongside King. “He stayed composed and knew how to play with a lead. It’s different when you’re in the final group, I learned from the experience.” Kim-Moss avoided costly mistakes over the two days and after a great first round he kept a steady head all the way to the winners circle, “I have been practicing a lot lately, (Bradlee Ryall) encourages me to work on my game and always get better.”
Kim-Moss had 11 birdies and an eagle over the two days and finished the tournament at 7-under. Kenney gave it his best shot towards the end but finished two back. G.W. King (The Academy at Georgian Bay Club), Steve Rodriguez (GolfTEC Markham), and Bill Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) rounded out the top five.
