Ken Tarling nabs PGA of Ontario Senior Spring Open
The PGA of Ontario brought their Senior Player of the Year series to Heron Point Golf Links on Tuesday, where 32 of the zones top Senior Professionals took to the course in the Senior Spring Open. The Spring Open is the first of four events in the Senior Player of the Year series and players want to get the season off to a hot start.
At mid day Ian Doig and Ken Tarling were up to their old tricks and shared a one shot lead after nine holes. Both guys kick started their day on the fourth hole, making birdie on the 600 yard par 5. Tarling managed to pull away from the pack on the back nine, carding two birdies and a bogey, on his way to a 2-under 69 finish.
The 58 year old Tarling is leaving on Friday to rejoin the European Senior Tour for the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open. Tarling grabbed the fifth and last available card in a playoff this past January after finishing 51st last year on Tour. (CLICK HERE to watch Playoff video)
“I hit it great today,” Tarling said, “I’ve been struggling with my game since September but I had a great lesson on Sunday.” Tarling and his son Kevin, who is also a PGA of Ontario Professional, went to the range at The Granite Club and Kevin Tarling broke his accomplished father’s swing down. “He nailed it. It took him two seconds to see what was wrong. He had me picking up speed from my follow through to my finish and it added 12-15 yards to every single club in my bag.” Tarling’s first call after the win was to his son, and he will happily share the victory with him.
The Senior Spring Open was the only PGA of Ontario senior event on the schedule that Tarling has yet to win. “I’m usually over seas by now, so I was really happy to be able to come out. Taking a win over to Wales with me is going to be a huge confidence boost.” Gar Hamilton, ended the day with a two shot victory over Bob Beauchemin and Rick Willan to take top spot in the 60+ Super Senior Division. His 1-under 70 was also good enough for second spot in the regular division.
