Lookout Point Country Club wins 2022 Senior Ryder Cup

LONDON, ON: Following 1234 regular season matches, between 156 member clubs (161 TEAMS), and 132 playoff matches at five regional playoffs, the twenty third annual Senior Ryder Cup Championship was contested on September 18th and 19^th at the Lookout Point Country Club in Fonthill. Sixteen teams qualified for the event. Following completion of 64 Championship matches, over two days, the Lookout Point Country Club team emerged as the 2022 Champions.

With 19 of a possible 24 points, Lookout were tied for the lead following play on Day one, with Heron Point. On Day two they were almost perfect by earning 23 of a possible 24 points for a total of 42 points and a comfortable 10-point win over second place Vespra Hills Golf Club who finished with 32 points.

The matches were played in rain, sunlight, blustery winds and a variety of temperatures on the Walter Travis design which is regularly ranked in the Top 100 Courses in Canada. Greens were lightning fast with an emphasis on keeping your ball below the hole.

Lookout Point earned their fourth SRC Championship title having won the inaugural event in 1999 followed by wins in 2004 and again in 2014. The delighted Lookout Point team, and their long time Captain, Doug Piett, appear below accepting the Art Stead SRC Championship Trophy from Art Stead (SRC founder), and Tom Nederpel (SRC President).

Barrie Country Club and West Haven Golf & CC finish tied for third with 30 points while Pointe West held down fifth spot with 28 points.

The other clubs that qualified for the Championship included: Cardinal Lakes, Glencairn, Hylands, RiverBend, Rolling Meadows, Saugeen #1, Smuggler’s Glen, Thornhill, West Haven, Whitevale # 1 and Whitevale #2.

During the event, Senior Ryder Cup Vice-President Wayne Bishop presented a cheque for $2000 to Golf Canada’s Katherine Hale (Coordinator, First Tee – Ontario) in support of the Golf Canada First Tee program.

Originating in 1999, with four member clubs, the not-for-profit Senior Ryder Cup is Canada’s largest team golf competition. In 2022, more than 2000 players from 156 clubs (152 Ontario Clubs, 4 clubs from Western New York) participated.
