Reader has golf ball from Tiger’s greatest shot
Last week we linked to a great story written by Cameron Morfit of PGATour.com about Tiger Woods’ amazing shot from the bunker to the 18th green at Glen Abbey, which set up a birdie to clinch the 2000 Bell Canadian Open. (You can read Cameron’s story HERE).
That led to a note from my friend Dave Frantz, a Devil’s Pulpit member and long-time Fairways Magazine reader.
Hello Peter
I hope all is well with you and your family. If it wasn’t for golf, I think I would go crazy
As I opened up your recent issue of Fairways my eyes darted to Cameron Morfit’s story about Tiger’s shot out of the 18th fairway bunker in 2000. That was a great read and took me back like it was yesterday.
Here’s my story….
I worked for ESPN/TSN as a spotter at the 2000 Canadian Open. My assigned group finished a half dozen groups ahead of Tiger.
I radioed Doug Stone that my group finished their round. I was instructed to stay at the back of 18 and call the shots coming in to the green.
Here comes Tiger and “The Shot”.
Long story short……after Tiger putted out, shook hands with everyone, Steve Williams walks by me and tosses me a ball. Years later, a buddy asks me if that was the ball that Tiger hit out of the bunker. That’s when it hit me.
I reached out to Mark McCormick to see if Tiger would sign the ball. After no response, I emailed Steve Williams and shared the events.
His response was “If you have the ball that I tossed you off the back of 18, that is the ball that Tiger hit out of the bunker”.
I couriered the ball to him and 6 weeks later……
Thank you for your wonderful magazine
Be well,
Dave
