Book Review: Getting Unstuck: Seven Transformational Practices for Golf Nerds

Most readers are familiar with Tim O’Connor from his columns and interviews in Fairways. His latest book, Getting Unstuck: Seven Transformational Practices for Golf Nerds, came out in the fall. I’ve read it in its entirety several times and some sections many more times. It continues to be a source of inspiration in my own quest to figure this game out. Here’s my take on Tim’s book.

Getting Unstuck: Seven Transformational Practices for Golf Nerds is a guide aimed at helping golfers overcome mental and emotional barriers that hinder their performance and enjoyment of the game. O’Connor, an experienced golf coach and writer, combines his expertise with personal anecdotes to provide practical advice for golfers of all levels.

The book focuses on the idea that many golfers are held back not by their physical abilities but by self-sabotaging patterns of thinking and behavior. O’Connor introduces seven transformational practices designed to help readers quiet their minds, break free from limiting beliefs, and commit to genuine improvement. These practices are not only applicable to golf but also have the potential to positively impact other areas of life.

O’Connor’s writing is conversational and relatable, making the book accessible to both seasoned golfers and beginners. He shares stories from his own experiences, including moments of frustration and personal growth, to illustrate the universal challenges faced by golfers. The book also includes techniques used by elite coaches and performers, such as meditation, visualization, and self-coaching, to help readers develop a more mindful and focused approach to the game.

One of the key strengths of the book is its emphasis on self-awareness and personal responsibility. O’Connor encourages readers to take ownership of their thoughts and actions, offering practical exercises and reflections to help them identify and address their self-defeating behaviors. By doing so, golfers can not only improve their performance but also find greater joy and fulfillment in the game.

In addition to its practical advice, Getting Unstuck is infused with humor and a deep appreciation for the quirks and complexities of golf. O’Connor’s passion for the sport shines through, making the book an engaging and inspiring read for anyone who loves golf.

If you’re a golf enthusiast looking to transform your game and mindset, this book will be a valuable addition to your library. It offers a blend of wisdom, humor, and actionable strategies to help you get “unstuck” and unlock your full potential on and off the course.

The book is available from Amazon.
