Brampton duo capture PGA of Ontario Assistants team event
After a long and unpredictable winter, PGA of Ontario professionals came out of hibernation this week for the annual kick-off event. The Assistants Team Series is always the first scheduled event on the PGA of Ontario tournament schedule. Weather is unpredictable and year after year the two-man scramble teams have a different element to overcome. This year it was the uncharacteristically cold temperatures. Two degrees at tee off and King’s Riding Golf Club’s natural defense combined to keep the players hands full as they navigated the 6502 yard track.
The weather proved to be difficult first thing in the morning for Kieran Harris and partner Brian McCann from Brampton Golf Club, although, Harris is proving to have a hot hand when it comes to team events. He has two T2’s, a playoff loss and now a victory in his last four PGA of Ontario team competitions. After a slow start and a bogie on the second hole, things were looking bleak early. Harris stuck it close on the 367-yard seventh hole and the pair didn’t look back. “It was so cold when we started this morning,” McCann said, “it took us some time to get rolling but when (Kieran) stuck it close on seven things turned around. We were only 1-under thru 9.”
The Brampton Golf Club duo played the last nine holes at 8-under par, with six birdies and an eagle finishing with a 9-under 62. “We thought we were in trouble after struggling early, but we managed to get our game on track before it was too late,” Harris added. He wasn’t far off either. There were four teams nipping at their heels, but their last birdie on their last hole managed to tip the scales in their favour for a one-stroke victory.
Teams of Alf Callowhill (Rattlesnake Point Golf Club) & Brad Kinvig (The Clublink Academy at Glen Abby), Ben McFaul (The Copper Creek Academy) & Chris Bevan (Credit Valley Golf & CC), Brad Kerfoot (Maple Downs Golf & CC) & Colin Murray (Kenesky Murray Golf Services), Cory Racioppo (Angus Glen Golf Club) & Eric Pipher (Angus Glen Golf Club) rounded out the top five. All just falling short of McCann and Harris by one shot.
